Abilene Christian University
Abilene Christian University is situated in Abilene, Texas. As a private University affiliated with the Churches of Christ, ACU was founded almost a hundred years back and was then known by the name of Childers Classical Institute. ACU has an annual capacity of over 5000 students and allows admissions to students not only from across the country but also from 60 other countries.
Accreditations
ACU is affiliated to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. All of ACU’s Business Programs are affiliated to the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Besides this, ACU is also a member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities.
With a mission to educate students for leadership and Christian Service all around the world ACU has time and again proved its excellence by putting quality courses on offer.
ACU Traditions
Here are some of them:
Sing Song
This is an annual competition and features student groups who sing a Capella medleys. Sing Song originated as a fundraiser but has now transformed into a major show. The show involves a costume performance on various Christian as well as worldly themes.
Summit
Until the year 2008, this was referred to as Lectureship. The Summit involves the gathering of hundreds of attendees who are interested in workshops and lectures on religious topics.
Spring Break Campaigns
These campaigns are held every year. A number of students participate in community service programs that last for about a week to 10 days in various parts of United States as well as some other nearby countries.
Welcome Week
This event helps bring together first year as well as transfer students with the help of small group-study programs, information fairs and a number of other social activities.
ACU’s Mobile Learning Initiative
This initiative was taken last year, i.e. the year 2008 where ASU announced free Apple iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s to all fresh students. ACU was the first University to embrace mobile phone technologies.
ConnectEd Summit
This summit was held in February 2009 where ACU hosted more than 400 technologists as well as academics from 31 states as well as 8 countries from around the world. The summit was held in order to encourage mobile learning in other colleges and universities as well.
Besides these achievements, The Campus technology Magazine branded ACU as the ‘Innovator of The Year’. Around the same time, ACUTA awarded ACU for Institutional excellence in Information Technology. Other awards were:
- The Dynamic Enterprise Award from Alcatel-Lucent on March 4, 2009.
- Centre of Excellence Award from New Media Consortium on June 13, 2009.
