Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)?


The JEE or the Joint Entrance Examination is an all India level examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) across eight IIT zones for student to get admission in the IITs, Indian School of Mines University (ISMU), Dhanbad and The Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi.

Admission into the IITs and the other institutions are purely based on merit and the performance in the class 12 examination along with the performance in the JEE is considered for admission into the above institutions. However a candidate can take the JEE examination twice i.e. for two consecutive years after completion of class 12 provided the candidate has not qualified in his/her prior attempts.

A candidate should have passed the 12th examination two years back or should be attempting one of the following exams namely, final exam of 12h conducted by the state or central boards, 2-year pre university exam or intermediate exam organized by a recognized university or board, final exam conducted by the Joint Services Wing of the NDA which is a two year program, GEC Examination held at London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka at the advanced (A) level, High School Certificate Exam conducted by Cambridge University, Any board/university in India or foreign countries which is recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities, HSC Vocational Exam, Examination conducted by the National Open University at the senior secondary level with atleast 5 subjects and finally 3 or 4 year diploma that is recognized by a State Board of Technical Education or AICTE.

Applications can be filled in on-line or off-line or by post from the respective IITs. The examination will comprise of two sections, each for a duration of three hours.  Both will have objective type questions on physics, chemistry and mathematics and answers have to be given in a specially designed ORS(Optical Response Sheet). Negative marks are granted in this examination for all questions which are answered incorrectly. The question paper can be answered in English or in Hindi and while submitting the application itself, this choice needs to be made.

The syllabus for this examination can be found in all the websites of the Indian Institute of Technology and one need to thoroughly prepare for the exam so as to get selected. Meticulous preparation is vital and understanding the concepts is the key to answering the questions. Calculators or tables are not permitted into the examination hall. The 2010 JEE examination is scheduled on April 11th, 2010 for which distribution of applications will start from November, 2009
